Chart of the Day: Midwest Leads in US Job Creation
Gallup released a poll today showing where the most jobs are being created in the US. It is in the Midwest. The graphic below demonstrates.
Overall 29% of employees polled by Gallup said their company was hiring while only 19% said their company was firing people. This differential is about the best we have seen since 2008.

Title is a bit misleading – the survey actually shows the proportion of companies in the region that are hiring vs laying off. The Midwest has the best *proportion*, but that is all.
To say “where the most jobs are being created in the US”, other factors need to be taken into account…
1. How many companies are there in the regions? (ie if there are 10 companies in the midwest and 10,000 companies in the South, the South *might* have more actual jobs being created, though not for sure without taking the next point into consideration).
2. If a company says it is laying off, is it laying off one employee or 10,000? If a company is hiring is it hiring 1, 100, or 10,000? It makes a difference! If 32% of companies are hiring one employee each (assuming you have not surveyed multiple people at the same company, who all know about the same one position being hired for!) and 19% of companies are laying off 1000 workers each, clearly more jobs would be lost than created.
That said, the Midwest, already suffering from high unemployment, seems to have been very hard-hit during the downturn, with very high levels of unemployment, so any good news there is welcome!
